The Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) announced on June 2 its sales estimates for the first quarter of 2026 (January–March). Combined revenue from physical music products and digital distribution reached 99.2 billion yen, up 6% year on year. Digital revenue rose a striking 14% to 46.4 billion yen, confirming once again that distribution is the market's growth driver.

Within digital, streaming accounted for 43.4 billion yen — 93% of all digital revenue. While download sales continue to shrink, expanding subscriber numbers and stable pricing are sustaining double-digit quarterly growth.

The quarter follows a solid 2025, when Japan's recorded-music market (physical plus digital) was estimated at 398.8 billion yen. The two-layer structure — physical holding firm on collector and bonus-item demand while digital lifts the total — looks set to continue through 2026.

For production and distribution practice, the implication is clear: with streaming above 90% of digital revenue, release strategy must be built around playlist placement, long-term listening, and catalog value. Consistent single-by-single releases and designed pathways back to older works matter more than ever.

Tracking the quarterly data also makes it easier to verify what works by genre and by campaign. Labels, distributors, and artists alike are entering a phase where public statistics should serve as the yardstick for their own numerical planning.

From the ZEN editorial desk: with the overall market still growing, this is an opportune moment for independent creators to enter the streaming market. ZEN CREATIVE LAB supports that connection through hands-on release support built around digital distribution.
