PIA Research Institute confirmed Japan's 2024 (January to December) live entertainment market (music + stage) at 760.5 billion yen — a 10.9% year-over-year increase that sets a new record. By genre, music came in at 529.9 billion yen (+11.4% YoY) and stage at 230.6 billion yen (+9.8% YoY), both showing double-digit growth. The 2030 forecast was also revised upward to 870 billion yen.
As publisher of the 'Live Entertainment White Paper'-style industry-data series, PIA Research Institute noted that the market is now 20.8% above pre-pandemic 2019 (629.5 billion yen) and 10.9% above 2023 (685.7 billion yen) — substantial growth. Drivers cited include the establishment of new consumption behaviors such as 'toki-shouhi' (moment-consumption) and 'oshi-katsu' (fan activity), the opening and increased utilization of large venues, and rising ticket prices.
From an industry-context view, even in the streaming-centric era, the fact that the live market continues to expand as a revenue pillar of the music industry is a critical industry-design point. The shift in demand toward fan activity and experiential content multi-layers live-related revenue streams — touring, festivals, collaborations, merchandise, etc. The high utilization of dome-class venues is a representative example of this expansion design.
What this means for the music industry is that the upward revision of the 2030 forecast (2.4% CAGR) is significant. Having moved beyond pandemic recovery into 'the next growth phase' suggests live revenue can be expected to continue expanding medium-to-long term alongside music streaming. For tour promoters, planners, and venue operators, the revised long-term outlook is a data point that directly informs business-plan design.
From an industry perspective, the music genre's 529.9 billion yen vs. the stage genre's 230.6 billion yen also matters. Music tours, festivals, and concerts holding the main share of live-market scale supports a genre-by-genre data view. Independent creators and labels should treat live design — touring, festivals, collaborations — as a counter-revenue pillar worth deliberate planning.
From the ZEN editorial perspective, cross-reading PIA Research Institute's 2024 confirmed figures against the upward forecast revision reveals the long-term importance of building live revenue into the business plans of indie creators. Streaming revenue carries high volatility, whereas live revenue is a channel that allows planned, medium-to-long-term design. For CREATIVE LAB registered artists too, live design occupies an important position within the business plan.
