Spotify Refreshes Its Free Plan — Direct Track Playback and Jam Expand the Experience

Spotify has refreshed its free plan so that users can directly select and play songs from artist pages and playlists. The Jam feature for sharing music in real time with others is also spreading, greatly expanding the experience for free-tier listeners.
Where the previous free plan centered on shuffle play, this refresh widens the range in which songs can be selected and played directly. The room to use Jam, which shares the same play queue with friends, has also grown.
Improving the free-tier experience connects directly to funnel design that precedes paid conversion. How each DSP draws the line between free and paid is a point that affects both listener retention and artist revenue.
A wider free tier where songs can be chosen directly means more chances for newcomers and independent artists to be discovered. The importance of playlist design and release strategy rises further.
Expanding the free tier raises questions of balance with short-term paid revenue, but it is seen as a measure that supports long-term growth of the user base.
The ZEN editorial team is watching the change in free-tier experience design from the angle of exposure opportunities for independent artists. Depending on distribution strategy, this is a phase where gaps in reach can widen.
