CUTIE STREET, an idol project from ASOBISYSTEM's "KAWAII LAB.," reached No.1 on the Billboard JAPAN Hot 100 for the chart dated June 3. By combining tie-up series such as the Pokemon tie-up "Cute na Kyutai" and the Lotte tie-up "Nice da ne," continuous MV releases of original songs, and a short-form diffusion design linked to choreography videos, it reached the chart summit less than two years after its August 2024 debut.
CUTIE STREET is an idol project under the concept "KAWAII MAKER," and as part of "KAWAII LAB." it has layered tie-ups with major IPs—a collaboration with Lotte (a new ice-cream tie-up) and Pokemon (ending theme "Cute na Kyutai")—driving a design that simultaneously raises recognition and search volume on the Billboard JAPAN Hot 100 chart system.
The Billboard JAPAN Hot 100 is a composite chart combining streaming, radio, downloads, CD sales and mention volume on Twitter and YouTube, designed so that both progressive tie-ups and social campaigns work. CUTIE STREET stepped through every element of chart design in turn—appearing on the GRASS STAGE of the Chiba Soga rock festival "ROCK IN JAPAN" within a year and a half of debut and layering mid-size IP tie-ups.
From a production view, the high frequency of MV shipping and the high degree of tie-up placement stand out. A design of "10-plus MVs released within a year of debut" and "layering major IP tie-ups each season" creates a state of being listened to in tandem on both the YouTube algorithm and Spotify Discover Weekly recommendations, and can be read as having simultaneously expanded the fan base and advanced the chart standing.
Also worth revisiting: 'Nice da ne'
"Nice da ne," released as a tie-up song for Lotte's new ice cream, is also worth revisiting. Even as a CM tie-up, its composite MV concept symbolizes CUTIE STREET's KAWAII design. From an industry view, it is a useful example of leveraging cooperation with a tie-up partner as a design that raises recognition for each other.
From the ZEN editorial desk, CUTIE STREET's three-layer design of MV shipping pace, IP tie-ups and festival appearances can be read as a template for groups and idol projects aiming to debut. Layering mid-size IP tie-ups to create recognition and tie-up interaction, moving Discover Weekly and the YouTube algorithm together with continuous MV releases, and driving a diffusion lane with social shorts—this design is also readable for independent artists.
