Suno Responds to Proposed AI Music Labels as Metadata Becomes the Next Test

Generative AI music company Suno has responded to a proposal from eight music organizations, including the RIAA and IFPI, to label recordings as AI-Generated or AI-Assisted. Suno acknowledged the importance of transparency. The next business test is whether platforms, distributors, and standards bodies can carry consistent disclosure data from production through delivery and into the listener interface.

Music Business Worldwide reports that Suno said transparency matters and pointed to investment in watermarking, audio fingerprinting, and related disclosure tools. The company also argued that artists and platforms should retain a role in deciding how complex uses of AI are treated.

Two Labels for Different Uses

The proposal separates recordings whose primary creative elements were generated by AI from human-led recordings that use generative AI for some expressive elements. At this stage, the labels focus on sound recordings rather than lyrics, compositions, videos, or cover art.
