Billboard JAPAN's charts published on July 29, 2026 put Nogizaka46's single "Zehi ni Oyobazu" at number one on Top Singles Sales with 756,354 copies. Streaming Songs went a different way, with Mrs. GREEN APPLE's "Brand New" holding the top spot for a second consecutive week. The split between physical sales and play counts was on clear display.
"Brand New" arrived on July 13 as the Japanese theme song for the film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it has been supported by a lyric video plus several television commercial edits. Hot Shot Songs, which tracks fast risers, crowned yet another track, making this a week where each metric surfaced a different record.
Japan's Hot 100 is a composite built from sales, streaming, radio, and video plays. That design makes it common for a large group's physical campaign and a tie-in-driven streaming track to take the top of separate metrics in the same week. Reading a single ranking in isolation makes it easy to misjudge how a record is actually reaching people.
For production and distribution planning, that split has direct consequences. Physical-led campaigns reward front-loaded promotion in the first week, while streaming-led campaigns build over the weeks that follow playlist placement, so assets need to be held back for the tail. The same budget takes a very different shape.
Also worth a look: the audio version of “Brand New”
Beyond the visual releases, a standalone audio version is also available, giving listeners a second route into the song. Building multiple entry points per track is a practical way to accumulate plays over a long horizon.
ZEN editorial view. The useful work in chart analysis is not the ranking itself but breaking down which metric a record is winning. Knowing which metric your own releases tend to move makes the next budget allocation far more precise.
